Navigating Survivorship Care in the 2SLGBTQI+ Community: Barriers to Care and Practical Tips for Health Care Professionals

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Define key terminology related to 2SLGBTQI+ identities and apply inclusive language appropriately in clinical and professional interactions.
  • Describe common structural and psychosocial barriers to healthcare utilization among 2SLGBTQI+ cancer survivors, with attention to subgroup differences (e.g., bisexual, and transgender populations).
  • Analyze how minority stress, discrimination, and social determinants of health contribute to disparities in cancer survivorship outcomes.
  • Apply evidence-based strategies to create inclusive and affirming care environments across clinical settings, including communication, documentation, and team-based practices.
  • Integrate sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection into practice in a way that is ethical, respectful, and supportive of patient trust and safety.
  • Identify practical interventions to reduce barriers to care (e.g., addressing financial toxicity, improving care coordination, enhancing access to supportive services).
  • Demonstrate culturally humble approaches when engaging with 2SLGBTQI+ patients, incorporating awareness of intersectionality and diverse lived experiences.

*Note: The 2SLGBTQI+ acronym stands for Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and intersex people.
